Southern Maryland

The weather this March has been interesting, so when I saw there was a chance of 70s weather, I took the day off work, maybe disguising it as a study day, and drove down to the southernmost tip of Western Maryland.
I had gone to Point Lookout State Park once when I was maybe in 6th grade, but I hadn't been back since. I remembered watching the sunrise over the bay, and just the great experience of camping there. My fiancé, Robby, had yet to go there ever, so I thought of no greater excuse to have him come along with me.
So, we visited Point Lookout State Park. We were going to go fishing, but the bay was a little too rough. However, we saw a lot of cool wildlife (ducks, Bald Eagles, jellyfish, loons, grebes, and heron), walked in the sunshine, and had a relaxing few hours with hardly any encounters with people. When we left, we stopped at the Confederate War Memorial & Gravesite because of Point Lookout's role as a Civil War Confederate POW Camp. We then drove a few minutes up the road to visit Piney Point Lighthouse. The Museum and Lighthouse opened March 25, which was the day after we left. However, it was nice to just walk around outside, and read some of the history involved there.
Keeping up with tradition, we also stopped at a local brewery, Ruddy Duck, and experienced some excellent food and drink. Our waiter, Matt, doubled as a middle school science teacher, and was so helpful in his suggestions. I ordered their Falafel with their homemade jalapeño onion rings and dill dipping sauce. Ugh. So good. Robby ordered their BBQ Duck Pizza and he loved it.
I also walked out with a growler full of their Apricot Nouveau, which is a beer, but it actually tastes like flavored water. Get out.
We had a great day in Southern Maryland. There is quite a bit more history down there that I would still like to explore (i.e. Dr. Samuel Mudd's house, to name one). But, if you're looking for a relaxing day trip during the summer, I would suggest at least Point Lookout State Park. They have kayaking and canoe rentals during the summer, and probably equal amounts of cool wildlife. I also hear St. Mary's City is a great place for shopping and dining.
If you visit, let me know!! Or, if you know of other cool things to do, leave a suggestion.
